It is safe to say that there is an underlining perception associated with having to expand access control systems. For many, this idea alone may seem like a tedious and cost intensive undertaking that will require a substantial amount of time, effort and training.  Though, given the rapid changing environment in realm of security, many understand that the topic is inevitable. The foundational reason why the process of thoroughly evaluating access control systems is important, is because if the right steps are taken early in the brainstorming process, the long term results can be rewarding.

This key concept of the perceived frustration that comes along with the evaluation of access control systems is a talking point made by Charles Schnabolk in his text “Engineering Practices & Security Technology”. Schnabolk, who is a security pioneer, master electrician and engineer in the field, explains this topic further:

“Once a card access system operates for a decade, the electronic components are generally, considered obsolete by the manufacturer who will no longer support the system with replacement parts(There is also a good chance that the manufacturer is no longer even in business). An even more serious problem, than the lack of maintenance, is that the system will eventually reach a saturation level and no longer allow additional ID cards or readers to be added to the system. When that point is reached, there is no possibility of meeting the needs of a growing facility. This is a scenario that describes probably 35% to 40% of all existing card reader systems because the salesmen that sold the initial system did not understand that expansion is inevitable and could outgrow the limited capacity of the proprietary system.

That said, an effective access control security system possesses the capability to expand in the future. ”

-Charles Schnabolk, Engineering Practices & Security Technology

As mentioned previously, the notion of taking the right steps in the early brainstorming process can provide long term results. In this regard, understanding the business needs and how expansion may affect the company in the foreseeable future are key factors to take into consideration. Understanding the key questions, will allow for a better evaluation of the access control systems in question.
